Chelsea and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head this summer in a bid to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to reports.
The Borussia Dortmund defender has been a long-term target of Arsenal, who will need to strengthen their rearguard in the summer following a chaotic season, undermined by defensive shortcomings.
Arsenal now boast former Dortmund talent spotter Sven Mislentat who masterminded the club-record transfer of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, but Manchester United are said to be at the head of the queue for the 29-year-old.
The Daily Mirror claims Jose Mourinho is still confident of signing Tottenham contract rebel Toby Alderweireld, but Papastathopoulos is on the Special One’s radar as well.
Summer signing Victor Lindelof has improved recently following a shaky start to his Old Trafford career, but Mourinho still harbours doubts over the long-term futures of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who continues to be plagued by injury.
Chelsea are carefully monitoring the Greek international’s situation, particularly with David Luiz looking likely to be on his way out of Stamford Brdige this summer.
But United are said to be the firm favourites with the club having received glowing feedback following several scouting missions this season.
